PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will not interfere with the decisions and actions taken by any of the Home Ministry's heads of departments, including the Inspector-General of Police.
“Their positions come with power to make decisions and carry out the enforcement. As long as the actions are based on the law, the heads of departments should have nothing to be worried about,” he said.
The heads of departments include the secretary-general, Inspector-General of Police, deputy secretary-generals, director-generals and division secretaries.
Dr Ahmad Zahid had his first meeting with the ministry's heads of departments here yesterday.
Also present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi, IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Immigration director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said with the move, the Opposition should stop accusing the minister or the deputy minister of interfering with the ministry's actions.
“I will not interfere with the enforcement of the law and actions by the IGP. I will not give any political input to him (IGP) because we do not want the ministry's actions to be politicised,” he said.
On a different matter, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno vice-president, said it was DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng who should apologise to him over his call for groups that do not accept the country's electoral system to move to countries where the system suited them.
“It is Lim who should apologise to me, because he misinterpreted my statement,” he said.
Lim had asked Dr Ahmad Zahid to retract his call and apologise to the people and has until the Parliament sitting to do so failing which, DAP parliamentary head Lim Kit Siang would propose for a censure motion to be made in Parliament.
Separately, after his working visit to the Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday, Dr Ahmad Zahid warned that those involved in illegal rallies must be prepared to face the consequences.
“Rallies questioning the general election results do not respect the country's political system and the Federal Constitution.
“I welcome differences in opinions but not those who break the law,” he said, commenting on the 505 Blackout Rally, expected to be held this coming weekend.
