PUTRAJAYA: Some 30 students staged a protest outside the Home Ministry this afternoon, demanding that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi resign in the wake of a string of arrests made on opposition politicians and student activists.
The students, who gathered there after the Friday prayer, held up banners that read “Polis untuk Rakyat”, “Pulihkan imej polis” and “Ahmad zahid letak jawatan”.
They demanded that Ahmad Zahid should resign as he has “failed to conduct himself professionally” and “keeps pinning down on anti-government people”.
“Within a few weeks of helming the home ministry, the country has witnessed a surge in political arrests.
“Ahmad Zahid must go because he has failed in his duty,” said Universiti Malaya Muslim Students Association (PMIUM) head Bukhairy Sofian.
They also want the reputation of the police force “cleaned up” and for Bukit Aman to stop being a political tool.
Earlier today, Ahmad Zahid, when asked about the protest against him, said the students had no right in deciding his position as the home minister.
“I am not answerable to them. I am answerable to the prime minister. However I welcome their views on the police force’s image,” he said.
Safwan vows to fight on

Four student representatives submitted a memorandum to the ministry, containing their two demands. Their memorandum was accepted by the assistant executive secretary of safety and public order department, Abdul Hafiz.
The rally was initially planned to protest against the prosecution of Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia president Safwan Anang under the Sedition Act earlier this week.
Safwan had refused bail as a sign of protest and had been in remand in Sungai Buloh prison until last night. He was released this morning after finally agreeing to post bail.
Speaking to reporters today, Safwan said the government was trying to divert the public attention away from electoral fraud by using the Sedition Act against detractors.
“Just because they want to cover up the frauds, they use the sedition charge.
“But I won’t give in, I will fight on,” he said.
The rally was attended by members of SMM, Gabungan Mahasiswa PRU 13, and pro-Mahasiswa faction in Universiti Malaya.
